Rush Limbaugh and Operation Chaos

UPDATE, March 28, 2008: Limbaugh safe from voter-fraud charges
Radio talk-show host Rush Limbaugh has been telling his audience for days now that he could be indicted for encouraging Ohio Republicans to take a Democratic ballot in the March 4 primary in what he calls "Operation Chaos."

Could that actually happen?

Not likely, Ohio officials say.

"We have no intention of prosecuting Rush Limbaugh because lying through your teeth and being stupid isn't a crime," said Leo Jennings, a spokesman for Democratic Attorney General Marc Dann.

...Some critics have complained that Limbaugh is improperly encouraging voters to break the law.

In Ohio, party-switchers are supposed to sign a form attesting, under penalty of election falsification -- a felony -- that they support the principles of the party whose ballot they are obtaining.

But Jennings said it would be difficult to prosecute anyone because they also have constitutionally protected freedom of speech and it's hard to prove voter intent.

"You can't just make the assumption that someone is lying," Jennings said.

...Limbaugh has a transcript posted on his Web site addressing listeners concerned about being charged with voter fraud.

"I wouldn't worry about it," Limbaugh said. "Look at this as a badge of honor, ladies and gentlemen. If anybody gets indicted, if anybody has to go jail, it will be me -- and I'll do my program from jail for the short amount of time I will be there before I am excused and the charges dismissed.

"I had the temerity, ladies and gentlemen, to tinker with a tradition, a liberal Democrat tradition: voter manipulation."

Posted by Ari Melber, The Nation:
"Operation Chaos," Rush Limbaugh's campaign urging Republicans to vote for Hillary Clinton in Democratic primaries, has been very effective. It doubled Republican turnout in Ohio and Texas, boosting Clinton and prolonging the Democratic race. But in Ohio, it was also almost certainly illegal.

Ohio law requires that citizens genuinely support a political party in order to vote in its primary. To change parties for a primary, a citizen must pledge, under the penalty of election falsification, that she is affiliated with the party and "supports" its principles. Lying on the pledge is a felony, punishable by up to a year in jail and a $2,500 fine. The law also stipulates that poll workers have a "duty" to challenge voters who are "not a member of the political party whose ballot the person desires to vote."

In Cuyahoga, Ohio's largest county, 16,000 Republicans switched parties for the primary last month. Several did so in bad faith, without truly changing parties, according to newspaper interviews and Internet postings. The Cuyahoga Board of Elections recently voted to investigate the matter; a report is expected on March 31. Despite the massive crossover voting, however, prosecutions are considered unlikely. A spokesperson for Ohio's Attorney General told Alternet that it is "very hard to prosecute" crossover voting cases, since the crime depends on proving a voter's motive on Election Day.

Limbaugh's motives, however, have been perfectly clear from the start. "I'm asking people to cross over, and if they can stomach it and I know it's a difficult thing to do, vote for Clinton," Limbaugh said before the Ohio primary. The goal, he explained, was to ensure Barack Obama was "bloodied up politically" and to extend the Democratic primary "soap opera."

Of course, prosecutions are unlikely.

"A spokesperson for Ohio's Attorney General told Alternet that it is 'very hard to prosecute' crossover voting cases, since the crime depends on proving a voter's motive on Election Day."

No kidding.

To say the least, it's disingenuous for Dems and their mouthpieces in the media to be foaming at the mouth over this.

Dems are aghast that people with no intention of voting for a Dem for president in November chose to vote for a Dem in the primary.

How dare Rush Limbaugh discuss that people can serve their best interests with their votes!

Liberal Poobah Markos Moulitsas rallied his troops to do exactly that.

Read more here.

Kos said, "Let's have some fun in Michigan."

Yes, the libs have fun, while conservatives should fear prosecution. Right.

Ari Melber concludes:

Limbaugh is lashing out at anyone who notes that he urged thousands of listeners, whether maliciously or ignorantly, to break Ohio law. He recently complained that NBC's Norah O'Donnell and the New Republic's Michael Crowley dared to discuss the issue. Then he was outraged that Fox's Julie Banderas said election law violations must be "taken seriously" and "Republican shock jocks" were possibly "anti-American" for urging people to break the law. And Limbaugh didn't like my recent criticism, either. When asked about crossover voting during an appearance on C-SPAN last week, I said that people should vote on principle -- not to undermine primary races. I also explained that "Operation Chaos" effectively urged people to break Ohio law, if they voted in bad faith, citing a Wired article. Apparently this observation upset Limbaugh, who recently played the clip while calling out "Stuff it, pal, stuff it!" Now it doesn't take much courage to talk back to a recording, and Limbaugh loves playing up partisan fights for his audience. But this is not only about politics. Limbaugh abused his listeners' trust and encouraged potentially illegal conduct. And after a Republican Justice Department spent years hyping voter fraud charges, now some of the most blatant election law violations are being stoked, repeatedly and unrepentantly, by one of the most prominent figures in Republican politics.

Good grief.

Melber should realize that it's a long fall from the top of such a high horse.

It's not breaking the law to vote for the person you want to win in an election. Yes, there's that line in Ohio's law that demands primary voters support the party's principles. To me, that's a very gray area, kind of similar to abortion on demand based on the health of the mother.

I have absolutely no intention of voting for a liberal Dem presidential candidate in the general election. However, in the Wisconsin primary, I voted for Hillary Clinton.

If I had to choose between Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton in the White House, I would prefer Hillary. I think she would make a better president.

Wisconsin has an open primary, so I faced no technicalities about pledging allegiance to Dem party principles.

Still, was my vote mischievous?

No.

I cast my vote in a manner that I believed served my best interests.

How is that fraudulent?

It's not.

McCain Won't Court Limbaugh

So much has been said about some of talk radio's nationally syndicated heaviest hitters and their rejection of John McCain.

Supposedly, McCain's Super Tuesday success was talk radio's defeat.

Is this feud a clash of egos or a battle among principled individuals?

McCain tunes out Limbaugh

While the presumptive GOP nominee knows he needs to reconcile with conservatives, he has no illusions when it comes to the radio host.

nomination almost within reach. He knows the need to reconcile with those conservatives who have so long sought to deny him the party's prize. But even such an obviously sensible strategy has its limits.

Chatting with reporters as his campaign plane flew from St. Louis to Chicago, McCain was asked about radio host Rush Limbaugh's frequent jabs at him. The Times' Maeve Reston was among those listening, and she reports that McCain suffers no illusions on this front.

"We'd like to have everybody on board," he replied. "We'd like to have a totally united party, but I also realize there are some people that just may not be able to support me at the end of the day."

He then acknowledged, with a typical one-liner, that he is not part of Limbaugh's audience: "There's a certain trace of masochism in my family, but not that deep."

McCain is joking around, but I think he's really ticked off about the drubbing he's been taking on much of talk radio.

McCain is in an uncomfortable position.

He has to know how important it is to unify the party for him to have any chance of winning.

But McCain is stubborn. Rather than reaching out to conservatives with misgivings about him, he's basically saying he has no interest in them.
(I think the hot-tempered McCain could convey his message to Limbaugh and his other critics with two choice words.)

He probably assumes that he can afford to ignore the talk radio demographic because he has that one golden thing going for him -- McCain isn't Hillary.

That strategy is somewhat dangerous.

The
results of yesterday's primaries and caucuses should serve to warn McCain that his opponent might be Obama.

In a race against Obama, and without the anti-Hillary vote to assist him, McCain will have a much harder time.

McCain doesn't want to admit it, but he needs talk radio on his side to succeed in November.

Bill Maher: Limbaugh and Ledger

Bill Maher used to be funny. I thought he was a good comedian and enjoyed his material.

He gave up on comedy long, long ago. Now, of course, he makes a living saying outrageous, horrible things.

Noel Sheppard of NewsBusters writes:

The hatred from supposedly compassionate and open-minded Hollywoodans is something to behold, isn't it?

After all, just imagine despising a radio talk show host so much that you would suggest, on national television, that he should die of a drug overdose.

Alas, such was the case Friday evening when HBO's Bill Maher actually asked guest P.J. O'Rourke, who was talking about Rush Limbaugh's use of the prescription drug OxyContin.

...Will Maher even get a slap on the wrist from HBO for this?

Yes, that's a rhetorical question.

Of course, what's really interesting is how just before Maher made this despicable remark, he was actually condemning Republicans for their antipathy towards John McCain:
BILL MAHER, HOST: Why is it, I was asking Amy this, why is it that the Republican establishment, I guess it is, have so much disdain, not just for McCain, but for the other guy who's still in it...Huckabee? They don't like either one of them.

P.J. O'ROURKE, WRITER: Well, I think a couple of things are going on. It's the it's the twilight of the radio loud-mouth, you know? I knew it from the moment the fat guy…

MAHER: …You mean Rush Limbaugh and Sean..?

O'ROURKE: …from the moment the fat guy refused to share his drugs (audience laughter). I was, you know…he never called, he never wrote. I'm ready to party, you know, come on! No, I think it's kind of over for those people. So…

MAHER: Right, you mean the OxyContin that he was on?

O'ROURKE: Yeah, exactly. I mean, that stuff's good!

MAHER: Why couldn't, uh, why couldn't have he croaked from it instead of Heath Ledger? (small audience groans)

O'ROURKE: Yeah, yeah.

How sick is that???

Maher wishes Limbaugh had succumbed to a drug overdose.

His remarks are truly despicable.

He's slamming Limbaugh, but I think he's also showing disrespect to Heath Ledger.

To refer to Ledger's death as having "croaked" from drug use is crass. He's exploiting Ledger to take a shot at Limbaugh.

Maher is so full of hate that it's stunning.

It's rather frightening that Maher has fans, or followers, or whatever you want to call them.

Do the Lefties realize how hypocritical they are at times?

I don't think they do.

Shameless Harry Reid and the Clear Channel Letter

Harry Reid is truly shameless.

He has the audacity to try and take some credit for Rush Limbaugh's auction of the
Clear Channel letter.

"Never did we think that this letter would bring money of this nature."

He's got to be kidding!

Reid is acting like he and the signatories of the letter are players in raising more than $2 million for the Marine Corps -- Law Enforcement Foundation.

On the floor of the Senate today, as usual, Reid spoke in somewhat fractured English and slurred.

Transcript of his remarks:

Madame President,

Earlier this month, I came to the floor to discuss some comments made by Rush Limbaugh. Following my remarks, more than 40 of my Senate colleagues and I co-signed a letter to the Chairman of Clear Channel Mark May [sic], telling him that we wanted him to confer with Rush Limbaugh regarding the statements he made.

I’ve since spoken to Mark May [sic] about this. Mark May [sic] in fact called me regarding this letter.

This week, Rush Limbaugh put the original copy of that letter up for auction on eBay.

Ms. (slur) President, we didn’t have time, or we could have gotten every Democratic senator to sign that letter. But he put the letter up for auction on eBay. And I think very, very constructively, let the proceeds of that to go to the Marine Corps Law Enforcement Foundation.

What is the Marine Corps Law Enforcement Foundation?

It provides scholarship assistance at children (slur) of federal law enforcement personnel whose parent dies in the line of duty, as well as health care assistance for disabled children of fallen troops. What could be a more worthwhile cause?

And I think it’s really good that this money on eBay is going to be raised for this purpose.

When I spoke to Mark May [sic], I think that he and I thought this probably wouldn’t raise much money – a letter written by Democratic senators complaining about something.

This morning the bid is more than $2 million for this. We’ve watched it during the week. It keeps going up and up and up. And there’s only a little bit of time left on it. But it’s certainly going to be more than $2 million. Never did we think that this letter would bring money of this nature.

And for the cause, Madame President, extremely good.

Now, everyone knows that Rush Limbaugh and I don't agree on everything in life, and maybe that's kind of an understatement. But without qualification, Mark May [sic], the owner of the network that has Rush Limbaugh on it, and Rush Limbaugh should know that this letter that they're auctioning is going to be something that raises money for a, really a worthwhile cause.

I don’t know what we could do more important to help to ensure that children of our fallen soldiers and police officers who have fallen in the line of duty have the opportunity for their children to have a good education.

Think about this. More than $2 million. This is gonna really help, and that’s, again, an understatement.

There’s only a little bit of time left, and so I would ask those that are wanting to do more, that they can go to Harry Reid at, search…, they actually go and say Harry Reid letter, and this will come up on eBay. I encourage anyone interested in this with the means to do so to consider bidding on this letter and contributing to this worthwhile cause.

I strongly believe that when we can put our differences aside, even Harry Reid and Rush Limbaugh, we should do that; and try to accomplish good things for the American people, and this does that, Madame President. More than $2 million for a letter signed by this Senator and my friends.

That's really pathetic.

Reid wants some thanks for writing a despicable smear letter and getting his colleagues to sign on to the hit job?

Sorry.

It was Rush Limbaugh who used Reid's disgrace to raise an enormous amount of money for a worthy cause.

Senate Democratic Leaders To Call On Clear Channel To Renounce Limbaugh's Attack On Our Troops

Democrats Ask Colleagues to Join in Condemning 'Phony Soldiers' Comment

Friday, September 28, 2007

Washington, DC—Senate Democratic leaders will send the following letter early next week to Mark P. Mays, CEO of Clear Channel Communications, calling on him to publicly repudiate Rush Limbaugh’s characterization of troops who speak out against the Iraq war as “phony soldiers.” The leaders are waiting to send Clear Channel this letter in order to give their colleagues – including those who have recently spoken up against attacks on our troops’ patriotism – the opportunity to sign this letter and join in expressing outrage at Mr. Limbaugh’s indefensible comments.

Below is the text of the letter:

Mr. Mark P. Mays
CEO, Clear Channel Communications Inc.
200 East Basse Road
San Antonio, TX 78209

Dear Mr. Mays,

At the time we sign this letter, 3,801 American soldiers have been killed in Iraq, and another 27,936 have been wounded. 160,000 others awoke this morning on foreign sand, far from home, to face the danger and uncertainty of another day at war.

Although Americans of goodwill debate the merits of this war, we can all agree that those who serve with such great courage deserve our deepest respect and gratitude. That is why Rush Limbaugh’s recent characterization of troops who oppose the war as “phony soldiers” is such an outrage.

Our troops are fighting and dying to bring to others the freedoms that many take for granted. It is unconscionable that Mr. Limbaugh would criticize them for exercising the fundamentally American right to free speech. Mr. Limbaugh has made outrageous remarks before, but this affront to our soldiers is beyond the pale.

The military, like any community within the United States, includes members both for and against the war. Senior generals, such as General John Batiste and Paul Eaton, have come out against the war while others have publicly supported it. A December 2006 poll conducted by the Military Times found just 35 percent of service members approved of President Bush’s handling of the war in Iraq, compared to 42 percent who disapproved. From this figure alone, it is clear that Mr. Limbaugh’s insult is directed at thousands of American service members.

Active and retired members of our armed forces have a unique perspective on the war and offer a valuable contribution to our national debate. In August, seven soldiers wrote an op-ed expressing their concern with the current strategy in Iraq. Tragically, since then, two of those seven soldiers have made the ultimate sacrifice in Iraq.

Thousands of active troops and veterans were subjected to Mr. Limbaugh’s unpatriotic and indefensible comments on your broadcast. We trust you will agree that not a single one of our sons, daughters, neighbors and friends serving overseas is a “phony soldier.” We call on you to publicly repudiate these comments that call into question their service and sacrifice and to ask Mr. Limbaugh to apologize for his comments.

Sincerely,

Senator Harry Reid
Majority Leader

Senator Richard Durbin
Assistant Majority Leader

Senator Charles Schumer
Vice Chairman
Democratic Conference

Senator Patty Murray
Secretary
Democratic Conference

What a bunch of quacks!

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid took to the floor of the Senate to smear Rush Limbaugh today.

He lied.

The senator from Nevada is a liar.

REID: Last week, Rush Limbaugh went way over the line, way over the line. While I respect his right to say anything he likes, his unpatriotic comments I cannot ignore. During his show last Wednesday, Limbaugh was engaged in one of his typical rants. This one was unremarkable, indistinguishable from his usual drivel, which has been steadily losing listeners for years, [sic] until he crossed that line by calling our men and women in uniform who oppose the war in Iraq, and I quote, "phony soldiers." [sic] This comment was so beyond the pale of decency, and we can't leave it alone. And yet he followed it up with denials and an attack on Congressman Jack Murtha, who was a 37-year active member of the Marine Corps, combat veteran.

Rush Limbaugh took it upon himself to attack the courage and character of those fighting and dying for him and for all of us. Rush Limbaugh got himself a deferment from serving when he was a young man. He never served in uniform. He never saw in person the extreme difficulty of maintaining peace in a foreign country engaged in a civil war. He never saw a person in combat. Yet he thinks that his opinion on the war is worth more than those who have been on the front lines. And what's worse, Limbaugh's show is broadcast on Armed Forces Radio, which means that thousands of troops, overseas, and veterans here at home, were forced to hear this attack on their patriotism. Rush Limbaugh owes the men and women of our armed forces an apology.

...Mr. President, just as patriotism is exclusive realm of neither party, taking a stand against those who hate and impugn the integrity of our troops is a job that belongs to both parties, all of us. I'm confident we will see Republicans joining with us in overwhelming numbers. "Confident" is the wrong word, Mr. President. "Hopeful" is the right word. I so I asked my colleagues, Democrats and Republicans alike, to join together against this irresponsible, hateful, and unpatriot[ic] attack by calling on Rush Limbaugh to give our troops the apology they deserve -- and I hope that all would sign this letter.

For his part, Limbaugh has apologized.
RUSH: I want to apologize to all of the members of the United States Military, both in uniform and out, active duty and retired, for Media Matters for America. They will not apologize to you, and they will not apologize to me. I want to apologize to you on behalf of them. As all of you military personnel know, I, since of beginning of time and since the beginning of this program, certainly 19 years ago, have been one of the most ardent, loyal, in-awe supporters of any and all who wear the uniform -- including those who disagree with the mission. I found a couple of them when I was in Afghanistan on a troop visit. I went over to five base visits in Afghanistan, and did Q&A, sometimes for two hours with assembled troops at the various bases. Not all of them were happy with me in terms of my politics and so forth, but I told every damn one of them that I was in awe of them and that I wanted to come speak to them, and I purposely asked to go on this trip, and I'd been asking for a long time. This is the first time I've been granted permission. But I wanted to go on this trip because at the time this was all happening, Afghanistan had sort of cooled off and there wasn't much news coming out of there, but Iraq was roiling, and the news out of Iraq was -- well, you know what it was.

It was bad. "We can't win. We're losing, too many deaths," and all this sort of thing. I wanted to go tell them personally, as an American, how small of a minority those thoughts about them were, that there was love and respect and adoration for all who wear the uniform in this country, active duty or not, but I was specifically referring to people in combat zones of Iraq and Afghanistan. I stood up before them, and I said -- even to the ones who let it be known that they disagreed with me politically, not on the war, but politically -- they all wanted victory, and they all were doing their victory, and they all said they were there to protect their country. This is what they chose to do after 9/11 happened, and I stood before them and I said -- and there are a lot of people, by the way, who were thanking me and all of that. It ran the gamut. I said, "I don't care who you are. I stand before you, and I feel six inches tall. Compared to what you're doing, I'm just, you know, uttering words here. I just wanted to come convey support because you're not getting a whole lot of it in the mainstream media in our country, and the attitudes toward you of the American people are being misrepresented to you in droves."

I said, "When you get back and walk into most airports in this country, you are going to be given standing ovations and applause." Of course, the story coming out of Oakland -- and I guess there's some controversy about it, but -- apparently some Marines getting home, landing at Oakland, were spit on by people in the Oakland airport. Now, I haven't been able to confirm it, but it's on a couple blogs and apparently there are some witnesses that say that they did see it. The bottom line to all this... I've described to you that the visit I took to Washington to Walter Reed Army Hospital and the amputee rehabilitation unit. So many of these men and their wives were thanking me for what I'm doing. That makes me feel six inches tall as well. (In fact, Justice Thomas and I discussed this in the interview coming up that you will hear.) I said, "I'm just uttering words. You guys, look at you." No, no, no. They were upbeat and happy. One guy had lost both arms. He couldn't wait to get married six months down the road. He said, "Look, we all have our roles, man, and you keep doing what you're doing." The bottom line to all this is that last week, with this smear and this phony accusation regarding something I had not said about active duty military personnel, or even those who opposed the war, was that once again the integrity of the US Military was brought into question when the integrity of the sourcing group, Media Matters for America, should have been brought into question.

They're a Hillary Clinton front group. They will continue to be used as an accredited source by the Drive-By Media, despite the fact that they have now been demonstrated to make things up, take things out of context, and embarrass those who report what they say. They will continue to be a source, because this is the '08 playbook that we saw break down last week, and the Democrats may still introduce their resolution in the House castigating me. I don't know. The House doesn't go into session 'til two o'clock. We'll have to wait and see. I don't know if they will do that or not. If they do it, it is just an effort to try to portray themselves as pro-military because they know they have to because they know the impression they have accurately created is that they're not pro-military, from Jack Murtha to Harry Reid claiming defeat, to John Kerry's lifetime of criticism of the soldiers. So they're going to try to deflect the criticism away from their pet organization, MoveOn.org, whose "Betray Us" ad backfired totally on them. It was a Wellstone moment for them, as this will be. But since you will never get an apology from Jack Murtha for mischaracterizing you as murderers, since you'll never get an apology from John Kerry, since you won't get an apology from Media Matters for America or anybody that works there, to all of you in the US Military, I want to apologize to you for them for the, again, firestorm over something that did not happen regarding your valor and your commitment to freedom and democracy last week on this program. I really regret that it happened, and I apologize to you on their behalf since they won't.

Mark Udall, Rush Limbaugh, and "Phony Soldiers"

Democrat Rep. Mark Udall from Colorado is planning to introduce a resolution today to condemn Rush Limbaugh for his "phony soldiers" remark.
September 28, 2007

JOIN AS AN ORIGINAL COSPONSOR OF A RESOLUTION

HONORING OUR ARMED FORCES AND

CONDEMNING RUSH LIMBAUGH'S ATTACK

ON "PHONY SOLDIERS"

Dear Colleague:

On September 26, 2007 the broadcaster Rush Limbaugh told a nationwide radio audience that members of the Armed Forces who have expressed disagreement with current policies of the United States regarding military activities in Iraq are "phony soldiers."

On Monday I will introduce a resolution honoring all Americans serving in the Armed Forces and condemning this unwarranted attack on the integrity and professionalism of those in the Armed Forces who choose to exercise their constitutional right to express their opinions regarding U.S. military action in Iraq.

For more information or to cosponsor the resolution, please contact XXXXXXX in my office at xxxxx.

Sincerely,

Mark Udall

If this happens, I hope Republicans are prepared to introduce a resolution to condmen ABC's Brian Ross and Charlie Gibson.

Noel Sheppard of NewsBusters writes:

Just days before Rush Limbaugh was attacked by a number of press outlets for discussing "phony soldiers" on the air, ABC's Brian Ross did a segment on "World News with Charles Gibson" dealing with "phony heroes...scam artists...posing as the war heroes they never were, claiming credit for acts of courage in Iraq and Afghanistan."

Marvelously, this story was aired on Monday, September 24, just two days before Limbaugh made his comments. And, as noted in a NewsBusters posting by the MRC's Brent Baker, the report even mentioned the same "phony soldier," Jesse Macbeth, that Limbaugh did on his program Wednesday.

Will media attack ABC with the same zeal they did Limbaugh? Maybe even more important, will House Democrats offer a resolution to condemn Ross, Gibson, and everyone involved in ABC's report?

Good questions.

Is there any doubt about the answers?

In addition to exposing this absolute farce, Noel Sheppard also supplies details on the group behind the smear campaigns being waged against conservatives in the media.

Last week, two of the leading conservatives in the media, Rush Limbaugh and Bill O’Reilly, were dishonestly and unprofessionally attacked by press outlets that cherry-picked out of context remarks from lengthy radio broadcasts in order to vilify outspoken personalities whose opinions they don’t agree with.

Unfortunately, as folks around the country saw this play out on their television sets and newspapers, few were at all familiar with the organization behind the smear campaigns, or that this same group started the firestorm which ended with radio host Don Imus being terminated by NBC and CBS in April.

Maybe more importantly, even fewer citizens are aware that this organization is linked directly to Bill and Hillary Clinton, as well as billionaire leftist George Soros.

For some background, John Perazzo wrote a column for FrontPage Magazine in July entitled “Media Matters: Hillary’s Lap Dogs,” that should be must-reading for all citizens interested in who's targeting America’s leading conservative personalities.

Udall really should reconsider introducing that resolution to condemn Limbaugh.

I can't believe that Hillary wants Media Matters, arm of the vast Left-wing conspiracy, to be scrutinized.

If the House moves forward with this phony "phony soldier" issue, Democrats should brace themselves for a hard fall.
