John Edwards' Poverty Tour and his Hair

Multi-millionaire John Edwards kicked off his poverty tour today with a town hall meeting on Good Morning America.
An audience member asked how Edwards could justify a $400 haircut he had gotten on the campaign trail.

"I don't," Edwards said to laughter. He said he wouldn't be doing it again. "Some lessons you learn the hard way."

Edwards said he simply wasn't paying attention during his hectic travel schedule.

Is that a promise that Edwards will keep?

As Edwards hits eight states, campaigning on his plans to alleviate poverty, he must go to SuperCuts or Fantastic Sams.

It would be the mother of all photo-ops.

I can't help but notice Edwards' hair on that photo taken on Saturday.

Just as during Election 2000 Al Gore's handlers dressed him up in earth tones to make him more appealing to voters, I think Edwards' people are urging the candidate to go with less than perfect hair.

Note the strand that's out of place in the photo above, a rare sighting indeed.

I think that stray hair is no accident.

It looks like a carefully calculated move, a new strategy to get the message out that Edwards cares more about poverty than his hair.

Will the strategy help to counter the hypocrisy of Edwards complaining about "two Americas" when he is the poster boy for the rich and pampered?

We'll have to wait and see if the vain Edwards can tolerate mussed up hair.

"I--think--I--can, I--think--I--can."
