Possible Hate Crime in Dane County

From the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:
A car set ablaze in Dane County may have been the result of a hate crime, investigators suspect, after sheriff's deputies found the letters "KKK" painted in red on the outside of the vehicle.

Deputies responded to the 4500 block of Golf Drive in the Town of Windsor for a report of criminal damage to property on Sunday. It is believed the fire started at approximately 1 a.m. The homeowners were not home at the time.

There was a strong odor of gas coming from inside the car, according to the Dane County Sheriff's Office.

Not much information there.

The Associated Press provides more specifics:

Dane County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Elise Schaeffer says the presumed arson happened early Sunday morning in the Town of Windsor just north of Madison.

She says the inside of a pickup truck owned by a family believed to be of Asian descent was set on fire and both sides were spray painted. She says one of the sides had "KKK" in red paint.

The owners of the truck are "believed to be of Asian descent."

Believed to be?

How difficult is it for authorities to determine the descent of the truck owners?

That should be simple enough.

If you're going to throw around terms like "hate crime," then at least be specific about what the particularly hateful part of the crime is.
