Derrick Shareef: Chicago Terror Plot Arrest

This is scary.

Here's the initial report:

(CBS) CHICAGO -- A suspect has been arrested in an alleged terror plot that involves a Chicago shopping mall, sources tell CBS 2.

As CBS 2 Political Editor Mike Flannery reports from outside the courtroom of U.S. Magistrate Judge Maria Valdez, a source tells CBS 2 that a suspect was arrested in a case with national security implications.

It involves a plot to commit an act of terrorism at a Chicago shopping mall, the source said.

The U.S. Attorney's office would not comment as of 11 a.m., but said a written statement and comments from U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald and FBI special-agent-in-charge Robert Grant will soon be provided.

A terrorist attack on Christmas shoppers truly does have national security implications.

This is not like the phony Patrick Fitzgerald pLAMEgate "Merry Fitzmas" joke of last year.

The arrest serves as a reminder that we have real enemies. They want us dead.

Here are some questions for the Russ Feingold, Nancy Pelosi-type crowd that claims the U.S. presence in Iraq has attracted the world's terrorists THERE, with the goal of killing Americans:

Why is a would-be terrorist in Chicago?

Isn't he supposed to be in Iraq?

If we retreated from Iraq, would this terrorist suspect in the Midwest retreat from America?

Here's more:

A man was arrested Friday by federal agents on charges of planning to set off hand grenades in garbage cans at a shopping mall.

Derrick Shareef, 22, of Rockford, was arrested when he met with an undercover agent in a parking lot to trade a set of stereo speakers for four hand grenades and a handgun.

Federal officials said he planned to set off four hand grenades in garbage cans at the CherryVale shopping mall in Rockford, about 90 miles northwest of Chicago.

He was charged with one count of attempting to damage or destroy a building by fire or explosion and one count of attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction.

Federal officials said that in September, Shareef became acquainted with a witness who was cooperating with the FBI and confided to him that he wanted to commit acts of "violent jihad," as well as other crimes.

Rockford?

This shows that terrorism is not only an issue for high profile targets.

It shows that no Americans are immune from the threat.

These so-called "lone wolf" terrorists need to be taken seriously. They can't be dismissed as marginal. They kill, too. They can blow buildings up, too.

Remember the bloodbath at the hands of Naveed Afzal Haq?

He murdered one woman and shot five others at the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle.

Why?

He's a self-described angry Muslim.

So he killed innocent women.

That's terrorism.

Thankfully, Shareef was stopped before he could kill or injure anyone.

Merry Christmas.

Peace on Earth.
