Hanoi Jane Takes It In The Face

Police: Man Arrested For Spitting On Jane Fonda

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Police said they arrested a man for spitting on two-time Academy Award-winning actress Jane Fonda during a book-signing stop in Kansas City Tuesday night.

...At about 9 p.m., police said 54-year-old Michael A. Smith, who had been waiting in line for about 90 minutes, passed a book to Fonda and then spit a large amount of tobacco juice into her face.

They said Smith then ran away and was taken into custody by off-duty officers, who were providing security for the event.

Fonda declined to prosecute Smith.

A Vietnam veteran, Smith was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct, which is a city charge.

I don't know if tobacco juice qualifies as food, but I think this incident can be included among the outbreak of food flingers across the country.

The other recent victims of food attacks have all been conservative speakers, including Ann Coulter, Bill Kristol, Pat Buchanan, and David Horowitz.

First, I condemn all such assaults. Resorting to these juvenile tactics is inexcusable.

Second, Fonda deciding not to press charges is commendable. She is making good on her claim that she understands the anger that Vietnam vets have for her.

However, she no doubt feels she can capitalize on her victim status and use her restraint to illustrate the fact that she "feels the pain" of every American vet she disgraced by cavorting with the enemy.

I wonder if Michael Smith regrets what he did.

We do know Fonda does not regret the Tokyo Rose style broadcasts she directed at American forces. She refuses to apologize for charging Americans in harm's way with filling hospitals with children and women and the elderly. She refuses to apologize for calling them murderers and for aiding and cooperating with the enemy during the Vietnam war.

At least, Fonda didn't press charges.
