Be Careful What You Wish For, Hillary

WASHINGTON -- "It has become increasingly evident that our nation was not prepared," Clinton (D-N.Y.) said in a letter to Bush asking him to set up a "Katrina Commission."

"The slow pace of relief efforts in the face of a mounting death toll ... seems to confirm that our ability to respond to cataclysmic disasters has not been adequately addressed," she said.

I get the feeling that this is déjà vu all over again.

Remember how foolish Hillary appeared in May of 2002, waving the New York Post around as she spoke on the Senate floor, trying to blame President Bush for not stopping the 9/11 attacks?

I think her attempts to use Bush as the scapegoat for the disaster in the Gulf will come back to bite Hillary and other like-minded political opportunists.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Buffeted by criticism over the federal response to Hurricane Katrina, President Bush said Tuesday he will oversee an investigation into what went wrong and why - in part to be sure the country could withstand more storms or attack.

Bush also announced he is sending Vice President Dick Cheney to the Gulf Coast region on Thursday to help determine whether the government is doing all that it can.

"Bureaucracy is not going to stand in the way of getting the job done for the people," the president said after a meeting at the White House with his Cabinet on storm recovery efforts.

"What I intend to do is lead an investigation to find out what went right and what went wrong," Bush said. "We still live in an unsettled world. We want to make sure we can respond properly if there is a WMD (weapons of mass destruction) attack or another major storm."

But Bush said now is not the time to point fingers and he did not respond to calls for a commission to investigate the response.

"One of the things people want us to do here is play the blame game," he said. "We got to solve problems. There will be ample time to figure out what went right and what went wrong."

No doubt, Democrats will demand that an investigation, similar to the 9/11 Commission, takes place to examine the Hurricane Katrina catastrophe.

They wouldn't want Bush to be in charge of such an effort. The truth might be revealed.

You know that Hill and the Dems are hoping for an opportunity to grandstand before the cameras, especially as elections draw near.

I wouldn't be surprised if Joe Biden is already working on his lines and practicing his dramatic delivery in front of the mirror right now. He may already be trying on new shades of makeup for the event.

I'm not surprised that Bush is anxious to clarify EXACTLY how things played out in Louisiana.

He is handling the baseless criticism and hysterics coming from the Left with such restraint. Bush is putting the business of dealing with the hurricane's victims ahead of any political damage control. His focus is on helping others, not himself.

It should not be forgotten that Bush was the Governor of Texas. He is very aware of the duties of that office and the responsibilities of state governments.

As far as commissions and investigations looking into the Katrina response debacle, I suspect President Bush would say, "Bring them on."
